Ray Sterling
Ray Sterling, President  (U.S.A.)
Dr. Sterling is a Professor Emeritus at Louisiana Tech University. He is the current President of ACUUS and Vice Chairman of the Committee on Underground Space of the International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association. From 1995 to 2009 he was the Contractors¡¯ Educational Trust Fund Professor of Civil Engineering and Director of the Trenchless Technology Center at Louisiana Tech University. Previously, from 1977 to 1995, he was the founding director of the Underground Space Center at the University of Minnesota. He is a Past Chairman of the International Society for Trenchless Technology and for the past 10 years has served as a Senior Editor of the international journal Tunnelling and Underground Space Technology.
Dimitris KaliampakosDimitris C. Kaliampakos, Vice-president  (Greece)
Mr. Dimitris Kaliampakos is a professor in Environmental Mining and the Director of the Laboratory of Mining and Environmental Technology located at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA). He is also Member of the Board of Directors in the Lavrion Technological and Cultural Park and consultant in Mining Enterprises and in Environmental Protection since more than 20 years.  Until now he published more than 130 papers and 3 books  in international peer-reviewed Journals and Conferences Proceedings. He is the Vice President of ACUUS since 2007 and was the President of the Organizing Committee of the       11th International Conference of ACUUS, held in Athens in 2007.

Yuan SiYuan Si, Secretary General (China)
Prof. Yuan Si was promoted as an Associate Professor at the Tsinghua University of Beijing in 1989 and a full Professor in 1991. He was appointed to be the head of the Department of Civil Engineering in 1998, the first Dean of the School of Civil Engineering in 2000 and the Vice President of Tsinghua University in 2008.  He is also Vice-president of China Civil Engineering Society (CCES), member of the Standing-committee of National People's Congress of China (NPC) and the Vice Director of the Environmental Protection and Resources Conservation Committee, NPC, China. He is the Secretary General of ACUUS since 2007.

Takeshi KurokawaTakeshi Kurokawa,  Director and Fellow (Japan)
Dr. Takeshi Kurokawa  is the President of the Institute of Behavioral Sciences (IBS) of Japan. The Institute is a comprehensive nonprofit research organization whose aim is to contribute public welfare in areas falling within the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications Agency and of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transport. Dr. Kurokawa is also the Acting Chairperson of the Urban Underground Space Center of Japan (USJ). He was the President of ACUUS from 1998 to 2007 and he is still member of the Board as the Director for the Asian region.

Evasio LavagnoEvasio Lavagno, Director (Italy)
Mr. Evasio Lavagno is professor at Politecnico di Torino with teaching activities in graduate and post-graduate courses at the Energy School of the Engineering Faculty. He was Dean of the Energy School from 1993 to 2003. He is also Director of the Italian Branch of the European post-Graduate Master in Energy, Technology and Environment and Director of the Energy Analysis and Modelling Laboratory (LAME). From 2000 to 2007, Prof. Lavagno was Vice-president of ACUUS and he is still member for Europe of the Board of Directors, where he devoted specific activities to continuing education programmes (Post Graduate Master Course TRUE ¨C Training for Underground Environment) and to the development of studies in the field of the underground urbanism. He was the President of the Organizing Committee of the the 9th International Conference of ACUUS held in Torino in November 2002.

Qian QihuQian Qihu, Director (China)
Prof. Qian Qihu is a Fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering and a distinguished professor at the PLA University of Science and Technology in Nanjing, China. He was vice President of ISRM (International Society for Rock and Mechanics), and now he serves as the President of Chinese Society for Rock Mechanics and Engineering (CSRME). He acts also since 2001 as a Director of ACUUS for Asia.



Jacques Besner
Jacques Besner,  General manager (Canada)
Jacques Besner is a consultant in urban underground space planning. With a background in architecture and urban planning, he worked 30 years as a municipal planner at the City of Montr¨¦al and was in charge of the Underground City development.He was one of the founding member of ACUUS, with Ray Sterling, and its Secretary General from 1997 to 2007. In 1997, he was President of the Organizing Committee of the 7th International Conference of ACUUS in Montreal. He is now acting as the General manager of the organization.
