SINGAPORE’S UNDERGROUND SPACE DEVELOPMENT
Singapore is poised to accelerate with its concerted long-term development of the underground. With a high population density and rapidly developing economy, underground space development has become imperative. In 2007, the government, under the Ministry of National Development, set up an inter-agency Underground Master Planning Task Force that aims to map out the long-term development of the underground, bringing the underground space to a strategic level. The newly completed underground ammunition storage facility and the on-going Jurong rock cavern project for hydrocarbon storage are some examples of recent underground development projects. The government is calling for tenders for a detailed feasibility study of an underground science city, and has commissioned concept studies for 10 more applications, including an underground landfill and a reservoir. Furthermore, the construction of underground metro systems and road tunnels has been ongoing since Singapore built her first Mass Rapid Transit in the 1990s. Singapore boasts the longest road tunnels in ASEAN, with the Marina coastal expressway, costing nearly S$5 billion, representing some of the most technically challenging tunnelling projects.

We look forward to welcoming delegates of the 13th International Conference of the Associated Research Centers for Urban Underground Space.
