To all
Professionals with Involvement in the
Sustainable Use of Underground Space
|
You have
probably visited our website because you attended one of the
past ACUUS conferences on underground space use or have otherwise a
strong
interest in the use of underground space for improved urban
environments,
improved infrastructure and substantial ecological benefits.
The effective
use of underground space does not rely on one professional
discipline alone. It requires planners who are willing to plan in more
than two
dimensions; architects who can make appealing underground spaces with
natural
transitions to the surface; geologists, engineering geologists and
geological
engineers who understand how to plan and design underground structures
for
minimum cost and minimum impact on the underground environment;
structural and
mechanical engineers to complete the engineering design and assess
energy use
and thermal issues; lawyers and politicians to adjust the legal
frameworks of
land ownership and to set policies for underground space; and
psychologists and
sociologists who understand the impacts of people being underground. No
doubt there
are many other professions to be added to this list.
The difficulty
in making progress in this important subject area is the
diversity of input that is essential for effective planning and
projects and
the lack of common forums for these disciplines to come together. ACUUS
was
formed to help fulfill this function. It has always been a rather small
organization with its main event as the biennial ACUUS conference.
However,
there is now a chance to grow the organization in terms of size and
effectiveness
thanks to the willingness of several Chinese organizations to come
together to
provide a more permanent secretariat for the organization. China is a
natural
location for the new secretariat due to the importance placed on the
use of
underground space in the replanning, rebuilding and growth of Chinese
cities.
Our conferences
are truly international and typically have participants
from around 20 countries. The recent conference in Shenzhen was a
wonderful
example of the range of disciplines and topics that can be brought
together.
Approximately 300 people including scientists, engineers and members of
the
local and governmental authorities attended the conference. The success
of
ACUUS needs strong international participation. Please join this effort
and become
a member of ACUUS in 2010. It is not too early to plan your next
contribution
to the ACUUS conference which will be held in Singapore in November
2012 and
there will be some ACUUS educational activities regarding underground
space use
developed during 2010 and 2011.

You
will find here an
admission form for 2010 that you can transmit by mail, fax or
e-mail. The membership of ACUUS is open to international, national and
local associations; governmental agencies; private firms and public
entities, like cities and local governments, interested in promoting
the objectives of the ACUUS. We sincerely hope
that you will consider becoming a member of our organization in
2010.
